What Can I Automate?

At AMS we help manufacturers increase productivity by helping them design and implement their factory automation systems. Automation in manufacturing streamlines processes to increase consistency and reduce downtime. Automated robotics systems are one of the fastest growing areas of automation. According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), industrial robots had a growth rate of 31 percent in 2021.  Robotics improves accuracy, speed and repeatability. They can suit a wide range of industries and applications and they shorten cycle times and help companies meet demand.

If you’re running any kind of manufacturing company, you are used to looking for ways to stay efficient and continue to innovate. You’re likely constantly thinking, “What can I automate?” When determining what can be automated, a good rule to follow is the “4 D’s”: things that are dull, dirty, dangerous or difficult. If the process you are looking to automate falls under any of those categories it’s very likely that it can and should be automated via robotization.

Dull

Tasks that fall under the “dull” category are repetitive and tedious. These require low interaction and human thought and are mainly connected to mass production. When robotics take care of these tasks it frees up human workers to take on more creative and interesting tasks and issues.

Dirty

“Dirty” jobs are likely to not be desired by the average person. These jobs might include processing specimens,  mine exploration or those that deal with hazardous materials.

Dangerous

Dangerous jobs would encompass a task that could be potentially life or threatening or increase the threat of injury or harm. We of course already use robots for dangerous operations like military situations, space exploration, bomb dearming and investigations, as well as for police work and security.

Difficult

Tasks that require a high level of detail and concentration and a low margin of error are considered to be “difficult” jobs. Difficult operations often deal with the medical industry whether it’s medical device manufacturing or medical surgery. At AMS, we specialize in automation for medical device manufacturing. We understand product failure could result in devastating consequences to a patient.

Implement Automation with AMS

At AMS, we’ll answer “What can I automate?” and help you design automation solutions that fit your production goals. Book a meeting with us to discuss your automation goals and how we can help.
